12-04-2012: Message To Student Organizations!!!
Dear student organizations,
I have had the privilege to work with your student organizations over the past three years. There have been a number of successful, creative programs led by student organizations. I would like to take this time to thank you for the time and energy that you have given to make Loyola’s campuses vibrant. With that said, this will be my last semester at Loyola University Chicago. My last day at the University will be Friday, December 7.
In my absence, the SAGA staff will continue to support student organizations. Any questions or concerns should be addressed to activities@luc.edu. You can also stop into the SAGA office to schedule an appointment with a SAGA staff member.
I wish all of you continued success with your organizations and academics. Thank you for the wonderful experience.
Happy Holidays!
Sincerely,
Jyrell Keys

11-21-2012: Semester Budget Request Update!
Dear Loyola Registered Student Organizations,
Due to the large number of semester budget requests that were submitted for the Allocations Committee to consider fo rfunding, decisions will be postponed until next Wednesday, November 28, 2012. I apologize for any inconveniences that may arise from this postponement, but the Allocations Committee will be using the time to make the best and most informed decisions on all funding requests. Appeals, as a result, will not be heard until the first Unified Student Government Association senate meeting of the Spring semester on January 15, 2013. Any appeals still need to be filed within five business days after the official Allocations Committee decisions are posted.
I wish you a happy holiday and restful break and thank you for your patience.
Cordially,
Blake Baiers
Chair of the Allocations Committee
11-16-2012: SAGA Office Closing
The SAGA office will be CLOSED from MONDAY, NOV 19th to FRIDAY, NOV 23rd in accordance with the Thanksgiving holiday. The office will REOPEN on MONDAY, NOV 26 during normal business hours.
Any immediate questions during the holiday should instead be directed to Student Development at 773.508.8840
Thank you!
11-08-2012: CFSU Lobby Policy Change
Effective since October 2012, the Centennial Forum Student Union (CFSU) Main Lobby area will no longer be available for programming use by the Loyola University Chicago campus community. As of October 2012, the only programs that may be housed in the CFSU Main Lobby will be programs sponsored by the Department of Student Centers.
Due to safety concerns, the Division of Student Development, in conjunction with the Department of Student Centers, has found the lobby unfit to hold larger campus events. To avoid being subjective as to which events were considered large/not large, we have agreed to remove the space from the Campus Reservations on-line web-viewer.
Any groups that have questions about this policy can contact Bryan Goodwin, Director of Student Centers, at bgoodwin@luc.edu.
11-08-2012: Organization SBR Review Session!

The Allocations Committee will review your organization proposal and make recommendations to strengthen it for the best outcome.
We hope to see you there!

08-27-2012: T.J. Sullivan @ August CAN Meeting
The August CAN Meeting will be on Tuesday, Aug. 28 @ 8pm in Mundelein Auditorium. RSOs are required to send at least one representative to every CAN Meeting. Given the topic and guest speaker T.J. Sullivan we encourage you to send not only your CAN Representative but also your President/Vice President. If you have any questions contact cwojtkowski@luc.edu
Below is a description of the presentation and the presenter.
Are you ready for a leadership keynote that challenges your students to make some big changes? How about something that inspires AND gives real actionable steps to move things in the right direction? How can they get your fellow students engaged? How can you get your officers motivated? How can you get people to give a damn? How can we get people to events? How can we get them to run for office, and step up more? Unfortunately, too many student leaders get frustrated by the apathy they perceive in their fellow members. They then respond to the supposed apathy challenge with fines, mandatory attendance requirements and negativity. Ultimately, these student leaders hit a wall, alienate their members and suffer from frustration and burnout. There is a better way.
Members disengage and cause drama because they don’t feel connected to their organizations? Would you open your mind to the possibility that there are ways to motivate your group’s members that don’t require making every event mandatory? T.J. offers student leaders a keynote that focuses on practical ideas—evaluating their events, changing their approach to meetings and redirecting their management of their people—attacking apathy head on. It’s about shaking things up, with an eye to re-igniting a sense of “connection” within organizations. Student leaders have the power to eliminate apathy if they take specific steps to make their organizations more responsive to the realities of their members. Sometimes, that means small changes, and other times it means a whole new approach to their student organization. Why do you meet when you do? Are you expecting every member to be engaged at the same level? What about making events more meaningful.
T.J. has been working with student organizations for more than two decades, and he uses his trademark humor and problem-solving style to energize student leaders who feel overwhelmed. This keynote is perfect for student activities leadership events, presidents’ retreats, fraternity/sorority life, or any other programming opportunity where students are searching for practical answers. They will walk away with ideas they can implement immediately.

04-13-2012: Single Sign on Coming April 16!!!
As an OrgSync user, you have previously been using a login ID and password unrelated to your university credentials. In an effort to streamline login procedures across campus platforms and to reduce the amount of username and password combinations you are forced to remember, we are switching to authenticated logins for the OrgSync platform.
What does this mean for you?
Essentially it means Loyola ID will be the one you use to log in to OrgSync starting on April 16, 2012. This will allow us to make sure our OrgSync community remains open to only those with Loyola University Chicago credentials.
What do you have to do?
If you used your Loyola email address, you will not need to do anything. However, if you used an email address other than your Loyola email address, we have not been able to connect your current OrgSync information to a university account. You will have to manually merge your account after the authentication date passes. You can do so by following these simple directions:
1. Log into the current account that you use/want to keep
2. Go to > Manage Account.
3. Click Import from Another Account
4. Enter the username and password for the account that you want to merge.
Note: This will permanently delete the account that is being merged but will pull your organization information.
Moving forward, OrgSync will not be able to provide password support as this information is not released to them. You will need to follow the instructions previously mentioned anytime you need help regarding your password. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about the move to authenticated logins for the OrgSync platform.
Thank you,
Student Activities & Greek Affairs
04-11-2012: Lama Ngawang’s Sand Mandala Construction April 11th –April 17th
In anticipation of the Dalai Lama’s visit on April 26th, Loyola and the Tibet Center of Chicago are proud to welcome Lama Ngawang Chojor to campus. Beginning at 10am on Wednesday April 11th in Norville Athletics Center, room 114 (south east corner), the Lama will do something both quite simple and profound. He will carry on the great Tibetan Buddhist tradition of constructing a sand mandala, as a spiritual and artistic medium of meditation aimed at the promotion of enlightenment and compassion. This particular and very beautiful mandala has a special tie to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It is the Mandala of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion.
The mandala construction will begin at 10am on Wednesday April 11th and proceed through Friday April 13th and pick up again on Monday April 16th and come to completion in the afternoon of Tuesday April 17th. The room will be open for viewing from 10am-noon and from 1-4pm each day. Do stop by for a short or a longer visit--it's easy to do.
The mandala will be available for viewing also after its construction until His Holiness visits on April 26th. After His Holiness sees it, Lama Ngawang will lead a moving ceremony in which he will sweep the sand into an urn and proceed to a nearby beach, to pour the sand into the Lake. All is impermanent.
Please visit this wonderful Tibetan artistic and spiritual practice. You will be intrigued, then amazed, then deeply moved. Lama Ngawang last made mandalas in Chicago in 1999 both at Loyola and at Chicago’s Field Museum. He has also made them in New York and many other locations. Come watch a master at work.
Mandala Construction:
Where: Norville Athletics Center just west of Dumbach Hall, room 114 (press room).
What Days: April 11, 12, 13, 16, 17
During what times: 10am-noon and 1-4pm

03-19-2012: Wolf & Kettle Day!!!
On March 21, 2012 Loyola will celebrate the second annual Wolf and Kettle Day. This symbolic day represents the point in the academic year when tuition runs out and support from generous donors begins. Tuition at Loyola only covers 74% of what it costs to educate one student for an entire year; the other 26% is made possible through the support of our generous donors. The day was created to not only educate students about the legend of the Wolf and Kettle but also to celebrate generosity!
This year's event will feature the unveiling of Los Lobos de Loyola. Join us at 3:45 PM between Dumbach and Cudahy Halls
03-06-2012: Student Activity Fund Reform
The current funding request system creates challenges which prevents the Allocations Committee from efficiently and effectively allocating funds to our Registered Student Organizations (RSOs). During the 2011-12 academic year 81% of the SAF was allocated in the during the Annual Budget Request (ABR) process in Spring of 2011. This caused the SAF to be over-committed in the fiscal year. Approximately $30,000 of allocated funds were swept back into the SAF after not being used by Registered Student Organizations in the fall semester of 2011. This inhibited the capabilities for the allocation of funds for programming during the academic year. With the ABR system it has become difficult for the Allocations Commitee to support programming for RSOs and provide effective counsel for preparing funding request.
A proposed system of semester budegt requests and spot funding request more effectively and efficiently allows the Allocations Committee to allocate the SAF to RSOs by bringing the funding request dates closer to the actual event dates. This will allow RSOs to prepare fully supported funding requests and execute more successful program and events. With less time attributed to reviewing requests and hearings, the Allocations Committee will be able to take an active role in outreaching to RSOs to assist in the preparation of funding request.
Allocation Authority
The Allocations Committee of the Unified Student Government Association will be the appropriator of the Student Activity Fund (SAF). Eligible Registered Student Organizations, as determined by Student Activities & Greek Affairs (SAGA), may request funding from the Student Activity Fund through Semester Budget Requests and Spot Funding Requests. All funding must conform to University policy to be eligible for allocation.
SAF Allocations Hearings
The Allocations Committee will hear semester funding requests and spot funding requests on dates determined by SAGA in collaboration with the Allocations Committee (dates determined by academic calendar). The Allocations Committee will hold hearings each semester for semester budget requests and twice in each semester for spot funding requests.
Spot Funding Requests
Spot Funding Requests are requests for SAF funding for programs. Spot Funding Requests will occur twice in each semester. RSOs may submit two spot funding requests per hearing.
Semester Budgets
Semester budgets are requests to provide SAF funding for an organization’s semester programs. The Semester Budget Requests process occurs each spring and fall semester in which requests are made for the following semester.
Budget Transfers
Budget transfers may only be used to transfer allocated funds from one category classification to another category classification within an approved program. Requests exceeding $1000, or fundamentally altering the premise of the budget proposal, must be approved by the Allocations Committee.
Appeals
RSOs may file an appeal of the Allocations Committee ruling on their funding request(s). The appealing organization must submit a petition within 5 business days of the decision to SAGA and the USGA Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This petition must include reasons for the appeal, any pertinent documentation, and a copy of the original budget request. If the RSO has made fundamental changes to the budget proposal, the proposal will be re-submitted to the Allocations Committee. In the absence of any fundamental changes to the petitioning RSO’s funding request, it will be placed on the agenda for the next Senate session. Members of the petitioning RSO will be allowed to attend the Senate meeting in which their request is heard; however only one member of the petitioning RSO will be allowed to speak on behalf of the RSO and answer any questions from the Senate. Any sustained appeal will be communicated to the RSO and SAGA within 24 hours of the Senate’s vote by the Chair of the Allocations Committee.
Grounds for Appeal of an Allocations decision
An appeal based on procedural error will consist of the RSO proving that the Allocations Committee failed to adhere to its policies. The Senate must first determine whether the Allocations Committee did in fact deviate from its policies. Should this be sustained, the Senate as a whole will determine whether or not to fund the RSO in full.
Line item appeal consists of a RSO disputing a particular line-item in an approved funding request. The RSO may appeal if the Allocations Committee reduced the allocation below the amount requested for a particular budget item, contending that the current allocation is insufficient to cover the cost of the event. The Senate will only rule on whether or not to allocate the full amount of the RSO's requested funding.
The above chages are effective immediately. Semester Budget Requests are due Wednesday, March 21 at 5 PM via Orgsync. Please visit http://www.luc.edu/saga/orgs/funding/budgetrequest/ for information on semester funding request.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Student Activities & Greek Affairs at activities@luc.edu or 773.508.8850.
02-24-2012: Student Activity Fund Update!!!
Dear Registered Student Organizations,
The Student Activity Fund (SAF) has been established to promote activities planned by student organizations that enhance the quality of student life at Loyola University Chicago. Through the funding processes, 324 SAF funding requests were submitted on behalf of Registered Student Organizations (RSOs).
During the 2011-12 academic year, RSOs have made a great impact on our campuses and have provided numerous opportunities for engagement. The SAF has funded over 200 programs and events through Annual Budget Requests and more than 50 programs and events through Special Funding Requests. Currently, there are 70 SAF funded events remaining until the end of the spring semester. The USGA Allocations Committee has allocated through the SAF a total of $475,000.
With that said, this letter is to inform you that the SAF has been exhausted. With high demands for funding and no available monies, it has been decided to cancel Special Funding Requests indefinitely.
RSOs with SAF funds will continue to provide vibrant programmatic opportunities for our campuses until the end of the 2011-12 academic year. As RSOs, you are welcome to program events using your organizations’ revenue. You are also welcome to seek funding from individual offices and departments for programs.
Thank you for your time, energy, and dedication to making numerous opportunities for interaction and involvement among students, faculty, and staff provided by the Student Activity Fund to support the intellectual, social, physical, emotional, and spiritual development of each member of the Loyola community.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact USGA/Allocations Committee at USGA@luc.edu.
David C. Blount
Chairman - Allocations Committee

11-09-2011: Join USGA's Cuisine Team!
The goal of USGA is to voice the concerns of the student body and to act as an instrument for cooperation and to provide open communication for students, faculty, and administration. Thus, the Residence Life and Dining Committee of USGA would like to address the issue of food diversity in the resident dining halls. Factors affecting students' food choices in the dining halls are usually due to beliefs of the student, whether it be religious, cultural, or just a certain lifestyle. Our goal is to have a diverse body of students motivated to change or improve the food options available in the dining halls. By creating a council, the "Cuisine Team", USGA's Residence Life and Dining Committee will provide an environment to help bridge the gap between the dining hall administrators and students in regards to student critique, comments, suggestions, etc. Come out to Cuisine Team's first meeting Monday November 14 at 8pm in LSB 301 and be the voice of your hungry peers!
Peace,
Residence Life and Dining Committee, USGA
